When to contact us
If you suspect you may have an allergic or immunological issue, please discuss this with your GP to determine whether a referral is appropriate. Some conditions have an immunologic basis yet may be best managed by a different specialist. Dr Newman is happy to advise you based on your referral.
Allergic disease
Allergies occur when the immune system reacts against usually harmless substances in the environment, types of food or drugs (“allergens”). The immune system is extremely complex and so there are many opportunities for things to go wrong. When the immune system reacts against an allergen, an exaggerated, damaging immune response occurs. Allergic diseases are common and are increasing in prevalence, complexity and severity.
What is Autoimmune Disease?
An autoimmune disease is a condition in which your immune system mistakenly attacks your body. The immune system normally guards against foreign organisms such as bacteria and viruses. The immune system also has an important role in detecting abnormalities in the body’s cells which if unchecked can lead to cancers. There are many different ways in which the immune system protects us from infection and cancers.
What to expect at your first visit
At your first visit, Dr Newman will ask you about your current symptoms and your prior health history.
He will ask you about:
– Previous treatments and how effective they have been
– Other medical problems you have
– Current medications you are taking including natural medications/supplements
– Allergies
– Family history
– Social history (e.g. who you live with, what supports you might require)
Sometimes a short summary can be helpful as it can be hard to remember this information at times. If there are sensitive topics you would prefer not to discuss, you can let us know prior to the appointment or at any time during the appointment.
